My father at times was almost crippled by this. Many people beleive it comes from a lot of alcool intake it's false, my father never drank. What he used to do to help himself, we were poor and medecine was too expensive, was drink loads of boiled water, avoid salt, sugar, tea and coffee.
I'm not trying to be funny or anything but try to exercise the affected area, usually a foot, to increase the blood flow, it'll help eleminate the uric acid crystals more rapidly, if exercise is not possible, a good rub done frequently will also help.
I have good memories about rubbing my father's foot, for hours, he'd say: Dam that feels good, keep going. Strangely gout can affect any joint, but his was always located in a foot, always the same.
Be careful walking around because the acute pain may make you lose the contact feeling of the floor, causing a false stepping.
Take care
