1. No they are not, Windows stores those thumbnails on a file called thumbs.db that file is not normally visible by the user, except if they are using specialist computer forensics software such as the one used by LEA et al.

2. No it is not, the swap file has a very specific place and it has a fixed size, which can be changed, deleting unused space from your hard disk will not delete the swap file.

And the worst is that Windows has a dozen more traps like this, remember that probably only one single mistake is needed in order to get you in trouble with your wife, it is next to impossible to delete 100% of tracks from Windows.

If you can not use full disk encryption then your best is a Linux live CD with Truecrypt, for example:
