Windows normally assigns a file type when an extension is associated with a program (for instance, on my system .flv files have the type GOM Media File because GOM Media Player is my default player for .flv files. Be aware that not all programs will change the types of data files they are associated with, though the icons of those files will change. If you want to associate an extension with a specific program you can do so. In the Control Panel, find the Folders applet and select the File Types tab. This presents a list of all the extensions of files present on your system and indicates which programs are associated with them (if any). Find the extension you want and click on the change button. This will bring up a window with a list of programs (and the ability to browse through your system if the program you want isn't listed.) Select the program you want. Generally the association takes effect at once, but will not be reflected by Windows Explorer until the next restart. hope that helps Joe |
