I can create and save a (dummy) file called dummy.flv and the XP search function finds it no problem. Searching for files and folders. Regardless of whether Windows has the file type associated with an app (whether it is "on the list").

Same with any file extension I can make up. Searching is not limited to approved (associated) file types. You do have Windows set to always show the file type as part of the filename, right?
