encrypting the whole system

I have Truecrypt, but I have never tried to encrypt my whole system/disk, or however you call it - I am not sure about the terminology. Hopefully you understand what I mean.

Is it useful if the disk has been used for a lengthy time already?

Secondly, does it make your system significantly slower?

Thirdly, why did I read somewhere that Truecrypt is not suitable for the whole system encryption?
