It is very rare to trash your disk while encrypting it, Truecrypt puts in place some measures to stop this happening. 1) Before Truecrypt starts encrypting the disk, which may take take around 4 or 5 hours depending on size of disk and computer CPU, Truecrypt carries out a dummy test rebooting your computer and forcing you to enter the password to make sure you got it right and the bootloader works. 2) Truecrypt will force you to burn a recovery CD-Rom before it starts to encrypt your system. You do not need to worry about this recovery CD-Rom falling in the wrong hands because it is useless without the password. The CD-Rom is used in case of future data corruption in your bootloader. 3) In case of power failure while encrypting the hard disk Truecrypt will remember where it stopped/crashed and on reboot it will carry on with the encryption where it stopped.
