Part of the greater "paranoia" from your American visitors is quite justified, not only because they are a targeted group as pedos, but also generally speaking. You may not keep up with privacy related events (and really, you probably wouldn't care at this point about such things), but you do know that Bush initiated some draconian measures that were very illegal even to the constitution. Patriot Act, secret warrants, tapping the phones and emails of all Americans, and much much more. Some of us were sure Obama would get rid of these illegal measures when he came to office. He has not. In other words, it has the appearance of being a permanent change, and a very corrupt one, since it's clear that they are in flagrant violation of their founding principles. Concern amongst all Americans has gone up, but you know very well that if everyone else is concerned for their privacy, pedos are only more so, since they were a major target to begin with. You don't need to break the law in the US for your life to go to shit. Your pedophile identity need only be discovered. It is quite a different culture from the open minded and more tolerant French Canadian culture. People lose their families and get ostracized. If they have children, CPS is known to try and take their children away just for having the pedo identity. You are routinely denied jobs, and if you are a professional, you will very likely have your credentials taken away. School teacher? Coach? Forget it. You're finished working with kids the moment you land on Google with the word pedophile attached to your name. And as you know, the southern US especially has the most intolerance of all, so people are indeed doing more than they used to to protect their privacy. And remember, they don't know what the near future holds either. Another successful large scale attack on the country and there are even worse laws just waiting to go into effect. And we don't know what the next rightwing president will bring, but we're all pretty sure it will mean even less privacy for all Americans, and greater bigotry toward pedos. Some want to be ready. Having the most privacy and being ahead of the curve in the event of an even worse future is somewhat reassuring. Had Obama been showing signs of reversing the trend of violating people's privacy, perhaps you'd see a little more openness instead of paranoia. However, he is simply keeping everything in place. And that is not reassuring to anyone. So... humor us. And be glad you live in a place which doesn't try to bully the world and then take away the rights of its own people when the inevitable backlash happens. |
